Contents
Background
Possibly a relation of Nicholas de Kerchove d'Ousselghem (born 1934)?[1]
Career
Gilles de Kerchove joined the European Commission in 1985 as an administrator in Directorate General IV for Competition. From 1986 to 1995, he worked for the Belgian government, as chief of staff of the deputy prime minister and various ministries.
EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator
He was made EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator in 2007.[2] He has not challenged the ideology of the "war on terror" and already in 2007 was suggesting that "Radical and extremist Islamic propaganda distributed in Europe continues to feed off events happening outside Europe. The Internet is one media outlet, perhaps the essential media outlet for this propaganda".
In 2010, he commented that
“We need to decide if Europe should create a continent-wide database to collect information on passengers. Many say this new menace must be fought with new tools.”
Gilles de Kerchove (4 October 2010) [3]
In September 2017, he warned that there were 25,000 "Islamist extremists who could pose a threat" and that "we are going to suffer more attacks."[4]
