Marketed as an anti-tooth decay improvement, there is increasing evidence that the fluoridation of water may have a range of deleterious effects upon the brain (e.g. lowering IQ) and may actually not have much affect on tooth decay. The academic community was for a long time extremely hostile to anyone who challenged this practice.

The fluoridation of drinking water is by no means as uncontroversial as the official narrative would have people believe. For decades it was a third rail topic both as regards is safety and efficacy, although that seems to be changing.

Official narrative

Official narrative

The official narrative (safe and effective") on fluoridation was strongly reinforced by the 1964 movie Dr. Strangelove, where skeptics were mocked as John Bircher "right-wing" crazies.

A simple echoing of the official narrative on water fluoridation is provided by a 2013 article by David Grimes in which he praises the practice unreservedly, stating that fluoride in drinking water is safe and effective at preventing dental caries and that the practice "is one of the few health interventions that saves much more money than it costs" and that "it’s easy to dismantle the arguments of anti-fluoridation campaigners". He quotes the Centres for Disease Control that "reviews provide compelling evidence that community water fluoridation is a safe and effective method for reducing tooth decay across all ages".[1]

As of 2017, although efforts continue to expand Fluoridation in some countries like New Zealand[2] and Israel,[3] others (e.g. Scotland)[4] are in the process of questioning its suitability and safety.

History

Dental health professionals at the beginning of the 20th century became aware of areas in the United States where the teeth of the absolute majority of the inhabitants had a noticeable dark color. This was named "brown stain", "Colorado stain", "Texas brown stain", etc. Research into the cause of the staining was finalised around 1930, when it became clear that it was Fluoride contamination of the ground water was causing the effect. Leading experts at the time, like H. Trendley Dean and Frederick McKay, also believed, that lesser cavities in teeth do occur in these areas.

Fluoride compounds as by-product of the chemical industry were already known to have severe health impacts, like in Meuse Valley, Belgium in 1930 where sixty people died. Trendley Dean, after the publication of some scientific articles on the matter, following a hunch[5] that the cause of lesser cavities is Fluoride, set in motion the first artificial fluoridation study in Grand Rapids and Muskegon.[6] Studies at the time, however, did already show harmful effects when adding it to the food of test animals.[7]Sodium fluoride, a waste product of the aluminum industry was used for the trial, which was planned to last 15 years, but was declared successful and ended after 11 in 1955.

The control city Muskegon started to add fluoride mid-way on it's own, to not fall behind with the health benefits for its citizens, making the study somehow useless. Some dentists, like John Frisch began agitating for a faster roll out of water fluoridation with the assumption that it has been established that 1ppm is a safe dosage and that there is no difference between artificial and natural fluoride. Research by scientific institutions like the Mellon Institute and the Kettering Laboratory, into the safety of fluoride had also started by at least 1937. Frisch was able to convince authorities that the causality between fluoride and lesser cavities is proven and was able to get 50 communities in his state Wisconsin to fluoridate their water supplies. By June 1950 he convinced Public Health Service to endorse the practice nation wide.[8][9]

Extensive research on the history of water fluoridation was done with the book The Fluoride Deception by Christopher Bryson.[10] Fluoride in drinking water has been shown to be strongly correlated with later ADHD prevalence, and high levels of fluoride are correlated with fluorosis and lower IQ.[11][12] Some areas in China have a high natural level of fluoride, leading to research aiming to find how much to reduce fluoride concentration to make it safe enough to drink.

Dumbing down

In 2014, The Lancet published a paper which mentioned that "A meta-analysis of 27 cross-sectional studies of children exposed to fluoride in drinking water, mainly from China, suggests an average IQ decrement of about seven points in children exposed to raised fluoride concentrations."[13].

A 2019 paper found that fluoride exposure in utero decreased the IQ of boys.[14] As of August 2019, a total of 69 studies have investigated the relationship between fluoride and human intelligence. Of these investigations, 61 found that fluoride was associated with decreased IQ.[15]

Other damages

Fluoride can induce inflammation and damage in rat brains, especially within the hippocampus.[16]

Fluoride can exert a deleterious effect on the pineal gland, affecting melatonin production, sleep and childhood development.[17][18]

"High fluoride exposure (markedly greater than in the water supply) has been associated with hypothyroidism, especially in the setting of iodine deficiency."[19]

In 2005, a study conducted at the Harvard School of Dental Health found that fluoride in tap water directly contributed to causing bone cancer in young boys.[20]

Reversal of fluoridation

In 2019 a 1971 policy of fluoridation was reversed in an Iowa town.[21][20]

Other suggested additives

In 2004, Dr John Reckless, chairman of Heart UK and a consultant endocrinologist at Bath University, put forward the case for adding statins to the water supply[22].

In 2020, Parker Crutchfield, Associate Professor of Medical Ethics at Western Michigan University proposed lacing the water supply with psychoactive drugs. "The problem of coronavirus defectors could be solved by moral enhancement: like receiving a vaccine to beef up your immune system, people could take a substance to boost their cooperative, pro-social behavior."[23]

In 2009 Fox News reported: "Lithium is a medication that in prescription doses treats mood disorders in people with bipolar disorder or manic-depressive illness. And what these researchers found in Japan is that lithium is present in trace amounts in the normal water supply in some communities and in those communities they have a lower suicide rate. And so they're really investigating whether trace amounts of lithium can just change the mood in a community enough to really in a positive way without having the bad effects of lithium to really affect the mood and decrease the suicide rate very interesting concept."[24]

Dean Burk“In point of fact, fluoride causes more human cancer deaths than any other chemical. When you have power you don’t have to tell the truth. That’s a rule that’s been working in this world for generations. There are a great many people who don’t tell the truth when they are in power in administrative positions. Fluoride amounts to public murder on a grand scale. It is some of the most conclusive scientific and biological evidence that I have come across in my 50 years in the field of cancer research.”Dean Burk
Murray Rothbard“It has always been a bit of mystery to me why left-environmentalists, who shriek in horror at a bit of Alar on apples, who cry "cancer" even more absurdly than the boy cried "Wolf," who hate every chemical additive known to man, still cast their benign approval upon fluoride, a highly toxic and probably carcinogenic substance. And not only let fluoride emissions off the hook, but endorse uncritically the massive and continuing dumping of fluoride into the nation's water supply.”Murray Rothbard1993
