Gareth Porter (born 18 June 1942) is an American investigative journalist, author and policy analyst specialising in US national security policy. He has written extensively on Afghanistan, Cambodia, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Syria and Vietnam.[1]

Ending the Korean War

On 30 August 2017, Gareth Porter was interviewed by RT and was asked whether he believed, as the Defence Intelligence Agency claimed and the Washington Post reported, North Korea had "missile-ready nuclear weapons". Porter responded:

"No, not necessarily at all. The best estimate from those who are outside the government, who are experienced and have no axe to grind is that they are not close to being able to do that. Which doesn't mean that they can't ever do it, but we are not at that point at this stage."

He went on to say that neither side "really has a military option":

"It's simply not realistic for either side, and they know it. The United States has not had a military option with North Korea for many, many years because Seoul the capital of South Korea is only 26 miles away from the North Korean border (38th parallel). And the DPRK has 8,000 artillery pieces trained on the capital and could destroy a large part of it. As many as 250,000 Americans live in the environs of Seoul, so this is a pretty strong incentive for the US to not try a military option against North Korea. Both sides are posturing, and what North Korea wants is to sit down and negotiate to get some concessions from the US - specifically to end the Korean War. The state of war has never ended between the United States and North Korea."[2]

Articles

Porter has regularly reported on political, diplomatic and military developments in the Middle East for Inter Press Service since 2005.[3] His analysis and reporting has appeared in Foreign Affairs,[4]Foreign Policy,[5] The Journal of Environment & Development,[6] Al-Jazeera English,[7] Press TV,[8][9] The Nation,[10] Salon,[11] The Huffington Post,[12] CounterPunch,[13] Antiwar.com,[14] and Truthout.[15]

Since 2006, Porter has been investigating allegations made by the US and Israel about Iran's nuclear program,[16][17] and he has done reporting on US diplomacy and military and intelligence operations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.[18]

Bibliography

  • A Peace Denied: the United States, Vietnam, and the Paris Agreement (1975) – This book is an analysis of the negotiation and implementation of the 1973 Paris Peace Agreement on Vietnam.
  • Cambodia: Starvation and Revolution (1976) – This book challenges media claims that the evacuation of cities was motivated by cruelty or ideological fanaticism rather than rational calculation and concern for solving the food problem in Cambodia. It compares the way in which the US-Lon Nol side and the Khmer revolutionaries each dealt with the problem of food and starvation.
  • Vietnam: A History in Documents (1981) – Porter originally edited this documentary history of the war in a two-volume hardcover edition published in 1979, and it was reissued in paperback under the above-mentioned title.
  • Vietnam: the Politics of Bureaucratic Socialism (1993)[19]
  • Perils of Dominance: Imbalance of Power and the Road to War in Vietnam (2005) – This book challenges the liberal interpretation that the Vietnam war was the result of exaggeration of the Communist threat, and emphasises the role of overconfidence that came with a decisive US power advantage over the Soviet Union and China. Historian Andrew Bacevich, reviewing Perils of Dominance in The Nation, called it "without a doubt, the most important contribution to the history of US national security policy to appear in the past decade."[20]
  • Manufactured Crisis: The Untold Story of the Iran Nuclear Scare (2014) – Investigating the "Iran Nuclear Scare" since 2006, this book attempts to debunk myths and disinformation that have been spread by the involved governments.
