Andrew Shearer is an Australian spook[1][2] who is "close to senior US officials".[3] He played a central role in the 2021 machinations around cancelling a $90 billion French contract for 12 submarines, in order to instead order 8 US nuclear submarines for $360 billion, to be ready by 2060, in what became known as AUKUS[4].

Career

Shearer has worked as political minister- counselor at the Australian embassy in Washington, D.C., where he impressed US officials, especially Richard Armitage (a "handler for Australia"), deputy secreatary of state for George W. Bush.[6]

Shearer previously worked as a national security adviser to prime ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott.[7]

In 2019 he was appointed Cabinet Secretary for prime minister Scott Morrison, a role that controls much of the business of the federal cabinet.[8]

Shearer has helped establish a new invention, the National Cabinet, made up of the nation's first ministers – the Prime Minister, premiers and territory leaders – to co-ordinate and deliver a robust and consistent national response to COVID-19.[3]
