Jutta Pauliina Urpilainen is a Finnish politician who became European Commissioner, where she implemented a number of SDS Covid policies.

In 2012 and 2013, Urpilainen participated in the Bilderberg conferences. Her trips were paid for by the Finnish state.[1][2]

Background

Urpilainen is the daughter of former politician Kari Urpilainen. She studied at the University of Jyväskylä, where she graduated with a Master's of Education in 2002. Urpilainen was president of the Young European Federalists of Finland in 2001.[3][4]

Career

She was chair of the Social Democratic Party of Finland from 2008 to 2014. She was the Minister of Finance as well as the Deputy Prime Minister of Finland from 2011 to 2014.[5] Since 1 December 2019, she is the European Commissioner for International Partnerships in the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen.[6]

Urpilainen was the SDP candidate in the 2024 presidential elections.[7] In the election, Urpilainen received 4.3 percent of the vote and remained in sixth place. Helsingin Sanomat described the result as”catastrophic for the SDP".[8]

She is for making the European Union into an European federation.

Covid

The COVID-19 crisis "proves the need for an international rules-based order"[9]

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are the compass that can lead the EU out of the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We need to rethink the COVID recovery as an SDGs recovery. Agenda 2030 is not only an agenda for governments, it is an agenda for all of society[10]

In February 2021, she said that "Distributing vaccines globally is our exit strategy from the pandemic, adding that the Commission will coordinate a "common EU vaccine sharing mechanism", in which EU countries can donate part of their vaccines through the COVAX program, especially when vaccine production is scaled up. "The main tool that the EU can help developing countries with" remains the COVAX assistance program, which aims to deliver vaccines to poorer countries and to which the EU contributed by €850 million, said the commissioner.

She announced new funds to shape society in the wanted direction. "With our new Action Plan on Human Rights and Democracy and a new financial instrument, we will promote democratic values, healthy institutions and thriving [[civil society] and media."[11]
