Oscar Fredrik Stenström is a Swedish civil servant. Stenström was appointed to lead Sweden's preparations to join NATO in the spring of 2022 by the then prime minister, Magdalena Andersson, with her successor, Ulf Kristersson deciding to keep him in the job when he took over as prime minister in autumn that year.
He attended the 2023 Bilderberg meeting. Stenström ended his post as a NATO negotiator on 1 September 2023 to work as an advisor to the Wallenberg sphere.
Education
Stenström is a civil engineer with a degree from KTH Royal Institute of Technology. He also did Studies in peace and conflict research at the University of Gothenburg.[1]
He was a member of Skövde municipal council between 1994 and 2000. He also was international secretary of the Swedish Social Democratic Youth League (SSU) from 1998 to 2000.[1]
Career
Stenström has previously worked as a foreign policy advisor to Stefan Löfven and Mona Sahlin.
From 2014 to 2016, he was state secretary at the Ministry of economic affairs for Mikael Damberg and was responsible for Foreign Trade, export and trade policy, investment and Sweden Promotion, the EU's internal market, simplification and innovation policy. In May 2016, when these issues moved from Damberg and the Ministry of economic affairs to the newly appointed Minister of Trade Ann Linde and the Ministry of foreign affairs, Stenström was also placed in the latter ministry.
He was Sweden's ambassador to Santiago de Chile from September 2018 to March 2022. Between 17 March and 19 October 2022, he was state secretary with responsibility for foreign affairs at the prime minister's office in the Cabinet of Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson.
Stenström was appointed to lead Sweden's preparations to join NATO in the spring of 2022 by the then prime minister, Magdalena Andersson, with her successor, Ulf Kristersson deciding to keep him in the job when he took over as prime minister in autumn that year.
