The Wuhan Institute of Virology is 8.6km from the seafood market originally claimed to be the first cluster of COVID-19 cases.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) opened mainland China's first biosafety level 4 laboratory in 2015. They carried out "gain-of-function" research on coronaviruses. Researchers from WIV have published many papers about novel coronaviruses, including transgenic SARS/HIV hybrid viruses. Zhengli Shi has headed the research.
"Since 2004, shortly after the original SARS outbreak, researchers from the WIV have been collecting bat coronaviruses in an intensive search for SARS-like pathogens."
The WIV does "gain-of-function" research, which seeks to increase virulence of viruses. The lab has been supplied with viruses including Ebola, Henipah from Canada, which reportedly doesn't do such research.
In 2016 researchers at the WIV reported "the isolation and characterisation of a novel bat coronavirus which is much closer to the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus (SARS-CoV) in genomic sequence than others previously reported."
Blame for Covid-19
The WIV has received funds for its "gain-of-function" research from EcoHealth Alliance, whose head, Peter Daszak, has publicly defended its importance and headlined a piece for The Guardian — initially without declaring any conflict of interest — entitled Ignore the conspiracy theories: Scientists know Covid-19 wasn't created in a lab.
|COVID-19/Censorship||“If one of the first thoughts that goes through the head of a lab director at the Wuhan Institute of Virology is that the new coronavirus could have come from her lab, then we are obliged to entertain the scientific possibility that it could indeed have come from her lab. Right then, there should have been a comprehensive, pockets-inside-out, fully public investigation of the Virology Institute, along with the other important virus labs in Wuhan, including the one close by the seafood market, headquarters of the Wuhan CDC. There should have been interviews with scientists, interviews with biosafety teams, close parsings of laboratory notebooks, freezer and plumbing and decontamination systems checks — everything. It didn’t happen. The Wuhan Institute of Virology closed down its databases of viral genomes, and the Chinese Ministry of Education sent out a directive: “Any paper that traces the origin of the virus must be strictly and tightly managed.””||Nicholson Baker||4 January 2021|

Whilst the author is circumspect, the evidence presented points clearly to the virus being the product of laboratory engineering.|
|Document:Was there a Wuhan lab leak?||blog post||1 June 2021||Jonathan Cook||No meaningful lessons will be learnt about what really happened in Wuhan. Maintaining the illusion of truth will continue to take precedence over uncovering the truth. And for that reason we are doomed to keep making the same screw-ups. As the next pandemic will doubtless attest.|
