Thomas Fouad Lund-Sørensen is a Danish diplomat and spook with many years of experience from the Foreign Service and the Defense Intelligence Service. Among other things, he has worked as ambassador to Jordan and the government's special envoy to Libya (Benghazi) during the regime change against Gaddafi. From 2012 to November 2021, Lund-Sørensen was the first head of the Center for Cyber ​​Security in the Defense Intelligence Service. He then became a partner and head of cyber risk at the British advisory firm Macro Advisory Partners.

Education

Thomas Lund-Sørensen grew up in Aarhus and Frederiksberg.[1][2] He is a student from Falkonergårdens Gymnasium and has a master's degree in political science from the University of Copenhagen (1990). During his university studies, he studied for a year at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris and in that connection received one of the first European Eramus grants. After employment in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, he received the state scholarship for further education at the French École Nationale d'Administration (1992-1994). In 1999 he was selected to receive the intelligence-connected The German Marshall Memorial Fellowship in the United States. Thomas Lund-Sørensen is educated in a number of main languages ​​at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' language school and Arabic at the Defense Language School.

He did military service in the Royal Life Guard.

Career

Thomas Lund-Sørensen began his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 1 August 1990 and dealt mainly with the European treaty negotiations and referenda on the Maastricht and Amsterdam treaties. He participated as a personal assistant to former Secretary-General Niels Ersbøll in the reflection group that prepared the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1995. From 1996 to 2000, he was ministerial secretary to Minister for Foreign Affairs Niels Helveg Petersen and head of the ministerial secretariat and, among other things, was in charge of press work and contact with the Danish Parliament for the Minister of Foreign Affairs.

From 2001 to 2005, Lund-Sørensen was Deputy Head (Envoy) at the Danish Embassy in Berlin.

In 2005, he was appointed account manager for the trade policy office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the Foreign Service's work with political advice for Danish companies on foreign markets was developed to constitute a significant area of ​​effort for the Export Council and the embassies. In the same period, Lund-Sørensen became involved in the first Mohammed crisis, which only became public knowledge when Saudi Arabian supermarkets began to boycott Danish products in January 2006.

In July 2006, Thomas Lund-Sørensen was put in charge of the evacuation of 6,000 Danes from Lebanon as a result of the summer war between Israel and Hezbollah.[3]

In 2007, he was appointed Denmark's first permanent ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.[4] The embassy became particularly noted for its public diplomacy efforts,[5][6] its involvement in the Arab Initiative and as the center of the second Mohammed crisis in 2008, when the Jordanian parliament voted to expel the ambassador[7]. As a result of the heightened security situation and changed political priorities, the embassy was closed in 2010 [8][9][10]. Lund-Sørensen returning to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as IT manager. In 2011, he was appointed as the government's special envoy to the TNC (Transitional National Council) in Benghazi, Libya, the HQ of the regime change government.[11][12]

From May 2012 to November 2021, Thomas Lund-Sørensen served as the first head of the Center for Cyber ​​Security in the Defense Intelligence Service[13]. During the period, the Center for Cyber ​​Security has grown from just under 30 to more than 250 employees, including with the establishment of CFCS's 24-hour situation center. The CFCS is the main author of the three National Cyber ​​Security Strategies, a handful of laws about the CFCS acting as a national cyber security authority and security authority within the telecommunications sector and has handled a large number of serious cyber attacks against Danish authorities and companies - including not least the SolarWinds case at the turn of the year 2020/2021.[14]

On 1 November 2021[15] [16]Thomas Lund-Sørensen replaced the civil servant role with the role of partner and head of cyber risk[17] in the British intelligence-connected advisory firm Macro Advisory Partners.
