He participated as a personal assistant to former Secretary-General Niels Ersbøll in the reflection group that prepared the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1995. From 1996 to 2000, he was ministerial secretary to Minister for Foreign Affairs Niels Helveg Petersen and head of the ministerial secretariat and, among other things, was in charge of press work and contact with the Danish Parliament for the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
From 2001 to 2005, Lund-Sørensen was Deputy Head (Envoy) at the Danish Embassy in Berlin.
In 2005, he was appointed account manager for the trade policy office in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where the Foreign Service's work with political advice for Danish companies on foreign markets was developed to constitute a significant area of effort for the Export Council and the embassies. In the same period, Lund-Sørensen became involved in the first Mohammed crisis, which only became public knowledge when Saudi Arabian supermarkets began to boycott Danish products in January 2006.
In July 2006, Thomas Lund-Sørensen was put in charge of the evacuation of 6,000 Danes from Lebanon as a result of the summer war between Israel and Hezbollah.[3]
