Single Bilderberg Dutch Minister of Defence
|
Aurelus Louis (Relus) ter Beek was a Dutch politician. He attended the 1989 Bilderberg meeting, caught a Bilderberg wind before being appointed Minister of Defence six months later.
Education
Ter Beek grew up in Coevorden. He studied political and social sciences at the University of Amsterdam. In 1964 he became president of the Democratic Socialist Student Association Politeia.
In his student years he became a member of the Dutch Labour Party, within which he belonged to The New Left. On 9 April 1965, as a protest, Ter Beek placed a banner reading: "We honor Van Heutsz, who burned down villages in Aceh", near the bust of Joannes Benedictus van Heutsz in Coevorden. A granddaughter of the soldier in question filed a complaint for libel, whereupon ter Beek was sentenced to pay a fifty Guilder fine.[1]
Career
In 1968 he became president of the Federation of Youth Groups of the Labour Party. A year later he was elected to the party executive. Ter Beek worked for some time as a scientific employee for the Dutch public broadcasting association VARA, after which he entered the House of Representatives at the age of 27.[2] from 1971 to 1975 Ter Beek was International Secretary of the PvdA. In the House of Representatives, Ter Beek was foreign spokesman on behalf of his party. He played an important role in the chamber debates on the apartheid government in South Africa and on nuclear weapons. He belonged to the left wing of his party in foreign policy.
He became Minister of Defence in the Ruud Lubbers government in November 1989. In his priority note it was decided to reduce and professionalize the Dutch armed forces and to suspend conscription. Ter Beek was first responsible for the Dutch participation in the Gulf War of 1990-1991 and for the deployment of Dutch soldiers to Bosnia (Srebrenica). His successor implied he sat drinking all day, finally staggering home at about five o'clock, under the critical supervision of his generals, in order to sleep off his intoxication.[3]
While still a minister, he was re-elected to the House of Representatives in 1994. Ter Beek left the House of Representatives relatively quickly, due to his appointment as the Queen's Commissioner in the province of Drenthe. This appointment took place on 1 January 1995.[4]
Having problems with alcoholism[3], he died of lung cancer in 2008.
