Attended the 1985 Bilderberg as Swedish Minister for Foreign Trade.
He was born to Gunnar and Kajsa Hellstrom (née Johansson). After graduating from Stockholm University in 1965, he taught economics at the university from 1965 to 1969. He joined the Swedish Social Democratic Party and was a member of the board of the youth organization from 1968 to 1972.
In 1969 he also became a member of the Executive Committee of the Swedish Social Democratic Party. In the same year he was elected as a member of the Swedish Riksdag. He ultimately held both positions until 1996. In Parliament he was a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee. From 1982 to 1983 he was chairman of the finance committee.
From 1969 to 1982 he was part of the Swedish delegation to the United Nations. From 1970 to 1975 he held the position of Chairman of the Royal Commission for Childcare. He was also a special adviser to the Department of Labor from 1974 to 1976.
From 1983 to 1986 he was Sweden's Minister for Foreign Trade. From 1986 to 1991 he was Minister of Agriculture, where he was also responsible for Nordic cooperation. From 1992 to 1994 he was Vice-Chairman and Head of the Social Democratic Group of the EU Parliamentary Group. In 1994 he again became Minister for Foreign Trade, EU Relations and Nordic Cooperation.
In 1996 he became Swedish ambassador to Germany. In 2002 he returned to Sweden and was County Governor of Stockholm County until 2006.
