Clarence Eden Mitchell is a journalist and spin doctor who has acted as spokesman for Kate and Gerry McCann since 2007. He stood as Conservative Party candidate for Brighton Pavilion in the May 2015 UK General Election, but was defeated by Caroline Lucas of the Green Party.

Career

In 1982, Mitchell was a volunteer at the Hendon and Finchley Times, where he first came in contact with Margaret Thatcher.[1] In 1985, he moved to the Sunday Express and then went as a radio reporter to the BBC in Sheffield and to the TV programme Look North in Leeds. In 1989 he worked for Breakfast News[2] in London. He was regularly used as an emergency response journalist, e.g. for the Kegworth Air disaster as well as a war correspondent in Northern Ireland, Kuwait, Iraq and the Balkans. In 1999 he became a BBC newscaster. He covered the Soham murders, the Fred West killings and the killing of Diana Spencer.

Media Monitoring Unit

In 2005, he became the director of "Downing St. No. 10 Media Monitoring Unit "under Tony Blair, controlling the flow of information to newspapers.[3][4]

Madeleine McCann case

In May 2007, he was seconded to the Madeleine McCann case in Portugal by the Consular Assistance Group, representing the McCann couple. He first met Gerald McCann on the occasion of the Leicestershire Police during a "Circumstantial Meeting".[5]

Blogging

In an article published on 14 June 2016, Craig Murray described how commenters on his (Murray's) blog had directly caused the posthumous exposure of the Clement Freud as a paedophile.[6] Murray wrote:

"It then all went quiet for a year before ITV contacted me this morning to tell me the story was running.
"It is hard to know what to make of Freud owning a holiday villa close to where Madeleine McCann disappeared. Clement was apparently not in Portugal at the time. When you add in the fact that the McCanns’ sleazy 'spokesman', Clarence Mitchell, works for Freud’s son Matthew, the coincidences do add up.[7] I am not jumping to any conclusions at present. But I found the following fascinating:
"Clement Freud assured Kate McCann she had nothing to fear from the cadaver dogs giving a positive response inside the McCann’s hire car, hired after Madeleine 'disappeared'. They had no evidential value. 'So what are they going to do? One bark for yes, two barks for no?' asked Freud."[8]
