UK/General election/2019
Date | 12 December 2019 |

The UK/2019 General Election took place on 12 December 2019 after MPs, by a margin of 438 votes to 20, backed prime minister Boris Johnson's call for an election following months of Brexit deadlock. The PM said it was time for the country to "come together to get Brexit done".[1]
Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn enthused:
"This election is a once-in-a-generation chance to transform our country and take on the vested interests holding people back." He said his party would "now launch the most ambitious and radical campaign for real change that our country has ever seen".[2]
LibDem leader Jo Swinson said:
"I am standing as a candidate to be the next prime minister and in these volatile political times that is absolutely possible."
Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage welcomed the election, tweeting that the deadlock had been broken and "Brexit now has a chance to succeed".[3]

Conservatives won 365 seats, an overall majority of 80 seats, Labour 203 seats, SNP 48 seats, LibDem 11 seats, DUP 8 seats and others 15 seats. The Brexit Party failed to win a seat, and LibDem Jo Swinson resigned as party leader after losing her seat in Scotland.[4]
Postal voting
Questions have been raised around a number of anomalies at the 2019 General Election, particularly surrounding the issue of postal voting. According to Lord Ashcroft, who surveyed over 13,000 people on election day who had already cast their vote:
- "We found 38% saying they had voted by post. The Conservatives won 48% of postal votes, with 29% going to Labour and 13% to the Lib Dems. 41% of Conservative and Lib Dem voters voted by post, compared to 34% of Labour and 33% of SNP voters."[5]
This 38% postal voting figure is more than double the 18% in the UK/2017 General Election (15.3% in 2010 and 16.4% in 2015).[6]
On Twitter, Jason Robinson tweeted:
- "#IDOX #GEFraud #InvestigateIDOX
- "Postal votes account for 38%* of the total votes cast.
- "They are 100% managed by a private firm called #IDOX.
- "There needs to be an immediate public inquiry!"[7]
38 Degrees petition
On 26 December 2019, Facebook campaigner Susie English created a 38 Degrees petition to "Demand an independent investigation into the 2019 General Election":
- "In the interests of democracy, the people of the UK demand an independent investigation into the way the general election was implemented. Since December 13th, reports have been coming out of:
- • Voters turned away from polling booths even thought they registered well within the given time.
- • Suspicion surrounding IDOX, its impartiality and its dealings with postal votes and the count.
- • Postal votes going missing.
- • Active campaigning by a supposedly impartial BBC and other mainstream media on behalf of the Conservative Party. (evidence can be seen)
- • Active demonisation of Jeremy Corbyn and the Labour Party by a supposedly impartial BBC and other mainstream media on behalf of the Conservative Party.
- "Many are questioning the fact that the majority ‘won’ by the conservatives does not ‘ring true’. Boris Johnson was booed and had tiny turnouts on all the campaigning he did...which wasn’t much, whilst Labour had massive turnouts and rallies. According to statistics, turnout to vote was lower than last election yet just prior to the election there were 3 million+ people rushed to register to vote and massive queues at polling stations. Postal votes are only meant to be opened at the same time as the rest yet a BBC journalist stated that they showed a high proportion of conservative votes well before this date!? People are questioning this election and whether it was ‘rigged’. Many ‘smell a rat’.
- To maintain our democracy, the electoral system has to remain transparent, impartial and above reproach. We demand and independent investigation into the 2019 General Election to establish if this was the case.
- "If anyone had personal experience of having difficulty voting please contact the Electoral Commission on this website to make a complaint as soon as possible..."[8]
The petition gained over 6,500 signatures in its first 24 hours, but was quickly taken down by 38 Degrees.[9]
Care2 petition
"We want an independent investigation into the implementation of the 2019 UK General Election" demanded the Care2 petition:

The Care2 petition gained over 3,000 signatures in its first week.[10]
Change petition
Oswald Beyzade started this Change.org petition addressed to the European Parliament, the UK Parliament and to the Electoral Commission:
- "The lack of transparency in the postal votes leaves the Election result open to abuse. The DPA 2019 (DATA PROTECTION ACT) was breached by That Boris Johnson's begging letter, millions were inserted into postal voting packs which should be void of propaganda from any political Party contained within, instead he used our confidential personal information protected under the Data Protection Act 2019 to directly Abuse and Manipulate the postal votes to gain favour and votes resulting directly to win seats and hence the General Election 2019.
- "Furthermore the Conservative Party and/or their supporting network have corrupted the postal voting in the 2019 General Election. In order to gain advantage and favour.
- "We the citizens of the UK demand A full UK and EU parliamentary investigation into corruption into the 2019 Election results. To prove this corruption I would like 2 Conservative MPs' postal votes sampled first which would save time and effort in such a complex investigation the 2 named Conservative MPs are Iain Duncan Smith and Dominic Raab. I am confident you will find the evidence of postal votes that have been rigged, corruption and fraud in both cases. Thank you for keeping real democracy safe for the people of the UK."
This petition has received over 5,000 signatures.[11]
