Gareth Porter (born 18 June 1942) is an American investigative journalist, author and policy analyst specialising in US national security policy. He has written extensively on Afghanistan, Cambodia, Iran, North Korea, Pakistan, Russia, Syria and Vietnam.[1]
Contents
Ending the Korean War
On 30 August 2017, Gareth Porter was interviewed by RT and was asked whether he believed, as the Defence Intelligence Agency claimed and the Washington Post reported, North Korea had "missile-ready nuclear weapons". Porter responded:
- "No, not necessarily at all. The best estimate from those who are outside the government, who are experienced and have no axe to grind is that they are not close to being able to do that. Which doesn't mean that they can't ever do it, but we are not at that point at this stage."
He went on to say that neither side "really has a military option":
- "It's simply not realistic for either side, and they know it. The United States has not had a military option with North Korea for many, many years because Seoul the capital of South Korea is only 26 miles away from the North Korean border (38th parallel). And the DPRK has 8,000 artillery pieces trained on the capital and could destroy a large part of it. As many as 250,000 Americans live in the environs of Seoul, so this is a pretty strong incentive for the US to not try a military option against North Korea. Both sides are posturing, and what North Korea wants is to sit down and negotiate to get some concessions from the US - specifically to end the Korean War. The state of war has never ended between the United States and North Korea."[2]
