Josef Krainer junior was an Austrian politician (ÖVP) and from 1981 to 1996 Governor of Styria.[1] He attended the 1989 Bilderberg meeting.
Background
Krainer was born into a politically active family, his father Josef Krainer senior was member of the Austrian resistance movement Organisation O5 during World War 2, and governor of Styria from 1948 to 1971. After elementary school, high school and studying law at the University of Graz he was General Secretary of the Catholic Action in Styria from 1956 to 1962. He also studied for a year at the Bologna Center of the US Johns Hopkins University in Italy.
Career
He joined the Styrian Farmers' Union, a branch of the ÖVP, and became its director in 1969. In 1970 Krainer became a member of the National Council, two years later he was elected state party chairman (party chairman). Between 1971 and 1980 he held the office of a provincial councilor (including for agriculture and forestry).
In 1980 he succeeded Friedrich Niederl as governor of Styria. In the Styrian state elections in 1981, he prevailed against the social democratic candidate. Krainer won an absolute majority in state elections in 1981 and 1986. He was Governor of Styria until 1996. He was considered an advocate of an independent course for his country and his party in relation to federal politics. Among other things, he promoted the expansion of the high-level transport network in Styria, advocated environmental protection projects such as the de-sulfurization of power plants and campaigned for a cosmopolitan Styria - for example through the creation of the Afro-Asian Institute. The crisis in the nationalized industry also fell during his tenure. In 1996, after the ÖVP could only just keep first place and had lost eight percentage points, he resigned and Waltraud Klasnic became his successor.
He was an honorary member of the AV Austria Innsbruck Catholic student fraternity.
Josef Krainer died on December 30, 2016 and was buried at the cemetery in the St. Veit district of Graz.[2]
