Tayibe Gülek Domaç is a Turkish politician and economist. The daughter of a deep politician, she was an adviser in the Prime Minister's Office, working on the Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan Oil Pipeline and European Union coordination. She was selected a Global Leader for Tomorrow by the World Economic Forum in 2002. She attended the 2011 Bilderberg meeting.
Background
She is the daughter of Kasım Gülek, one of the important figures in Turkish political history. As a trainee of the Rockefeller Foundation, he later studied at the University of London and at the University of Cambridge. He was a leading member of Atatürk's party, the Republican People's Party (CHP). Early in 1947 he was one of the leaders of group of thirty-five deputies who revolted in the party caucus urging reforms and liberalizations. He is best remembered for his role as the Secretary General of the Republican People's Party from 1950 until 1959, He also held several international positions such as Chairman of the UN Commission on Korea, President of the North Atlantic Assembly, and Governor of the Atlantic Institute.[1]
Education
Tayibe Gülek Domaç graduated from Harvard University with a degree in Economics in 1991. she completed her master's degree at the London School of Economics in 1992. In 1996, she completed the European Union course at the College of Europe in Bruges (Belgium).[2][3]
Career
In 1994, she started working as an adviser in Prime Minister Tansu Çiller's Office. During her tenure, which she held until 1999, she worked on the Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan Oil Pipeline, economy coordination, European Union coordination, Southeastern Anatolia Project and the implementation of total quality management in the state. In the April 18, 1999 elections, she was elected as member of parliament for Adana from the Democratic Left Party list. She entered the Parliament as the youngest female deputy of the term. On July 12, 2002, she was appointed by Prime Minister Bülent Ecevit as the Minister of State responsible for Cyprus and Citizens Living Abroad.[4]
During her tenure in the Assembly, Gülek was a member of the Turkish Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and a member of the Turkish Delegation to the Western European Union, and was Deputy Chairman of the Law and Human Rights Commission in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, as well as a member of the Commission on Equality between Men and Women. In 2002, she was selected by the World Economic Forum as one of the Global Leaders for Tomorrow.[4]
Gülek became the honorary president of ISAK (International Strategic Research Institution), a think tank based in Ankara in 2004, and the Deputy Chairman of the Democratic Left Party in 2007.[4]
She married presenter Murat Birsel in 1997, the couple divorced 1 year later. She married the economist İlker Domaç in 2002.[5]
