Schelto Patijn was a Dutch politician and civil servant.[1] He attended the 1972 Bilderberg meeting while director of the Europe institute of the University of Leiden. He became a member of the Dutch Parliament in 1973, and subsequently European Parliament. Later posts include Queen's Commissioner in the Province of South Holland from 1984 June 1994 when he stepped down to become Mayor of Amsterdam, which he was from June 1994 until January 2001.[2]

Education

Patijn was the second son of Conny Patijn, a Member of the House of Representatives, from 1956 until 1967, and Sara van Citters.

Patijn went to school at the liberal Vrijzinnig-Christelijk Lyceum in The Hague from 1948 to 1954. After that he studied law at the Utrecht University and became a member of the Utrechtsch Students Corps. Patijn graduated in 1959. During his conscription he rose to the rank of reserve-first lieutenant of the royal military police. In 1961–1962 he followed a post-academic study in Washington D.C..[where?] Thereafter he was a policy employee at the European Integration Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, up to 1967 when he changed to the Europe institute of the University of Leiden. Initially he worked there as a scientific employee, but in 1971, he became director of the institute.[3]

Patijn received a doctorate degree in September 1973 from the Utrecht University on: 'the European Parliament, the fight for its powers'.

Political career

Patijn was a member of the House of Representatives from 28 May 1973 for the PvdA and also a member of the European Parliament from 3 July of that year.[3] In the House of Representatives, he was spokesman for constitutional and electoral matters, and spokesman for European affairs. From December 1978 to August 1979 Patijn was chairman of a special committee to investigate who had known about the war history of Willem Aantjes, how this knowledge had been acquired and how it had been used. Patijn voted for a Dutch boycott of the Moscow Olympics in 1980. In early 1982 he was a candidate for mayor of Rotterdam, but minister Ed van Thijn preferred the 42-year-old Bram Peper.[3]

Patijn played an important role in the constitutional revision of 1983.

On 16 June 1984 Patijn became the Queen's commissioner in the province of South Holland.[3]

On 1 June 1994 Patijn became mayor of Amsterdam. He succeeded Ed Van Thijn. As mayor, Patijn initially wanted to halve the number of coffee shops in the capital.[4]

Patijn was succeeded by Job Cohen on January 1, 2001. After his departure as mayor, he continued to live in Amsterdam.

Later activities

In February 2001 Patijn was nominated for the Deputy Chairmanship of the PvdA, but he withdrew for health reasons. In April 2005 he succeeded Eberhard van der Laan as chairman of Stichting Groene Beheer, the governing foundation of De Groene Amsterdammer. In August of that year, he became chairman of the Complaints Committee on asylum policy.

After struggling with health problems for some time, Schelto Patijn died in the summer of 2007 at the age of 70.
