Peter Ammon is a German diplomat and was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Kingdom from May 2014 until 31 January 2018.[1]
Education
Ammon studied Mathematics and holds a doctorate in economics from Berlin's Free University.
Career
From 1996 to 1999, he was Head of Policy Planning and speech writer to the President of Germany, Roman Herzog.
In 2007 and 2008, Ammon was appointed German Ambassador to Paris, France. His prior diplomatic career included postings to London, Dakar in Senegal, New Delhi, and Washington, D.C.[2]
He was State Secretary (British equivalent title: Permanent Secr.) at the German Foreign Office in Berlin (2008–2011).
He was German Ambassador to the United States (2011–2014).
Criticism
Ammon was criticized as too passive when he was ambassador to Washington:
In his day job as a German voice in America, Ammon, who has only been in office since September last year, rarely sets the tone. Diplomats and transatlantics describe the former state secretary at the Foreign Ministry as passive and disinterested. "The German position is simply not being represented actively and forcefully enough in the USA at the moment – although this would be so urgently needed, especially in the euro crisis," criticizes SPD-politician Karsten Voigt, former transatlantic coordinator of the federal government. "We are operating under the premise that we do not currently have an ambassador in Washington," says a senior official at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin.[3]
