Education
Niemi graduated from the Franco-Finnish school in Helsinki. Niemi studied political history at the University of Helsinki.[1]
Career
Between 1995 and 1997 Niemi worked for YLE as a radio and television journalist and between 1998 and 1999 as a journalist for Nelonen. From 1999 to 2005 he was the foreign editor of Helsingin Sanomat, and in 2002 he was the correspondent in Brussels.[2] In the spring of 2002, Niemi was awarded the Great Journalist Award as journalist of the year for his reporting on the events in Afghanistan in 2001.[3] In 2010, Niemi became editor-in-chief of Ilta-Sanomat with a focus on digital content.[1]
In 2008, Niemi published a book on forensic dentist Helena Ranta.[4]
Editor-in-chief
After Niemi took over as editor-in-chief of Helsingin Sanomat in 2013, its editorial organization was reformed.[5] In the fall of 2021, three HS journalists were charged with disclosing a security secret and attempting to reveal a security secret in a 2017 case about military communications. Niemi was also targeted, but he escaped prosecution.[6]
In January 2021, Helsingin Sanomatpublish a free font "to demonstrate the effects of climate change" and "the urgency of the measures aimed at slowing it down". The font is of continuously shifting thickness, meant to illustrate how the ice cap is projected to shrink due to "climate change" by the year 2050.[7][8]
Drunk driving
On the morning of November 18, 2022, Niemi was found guilty of aggravated drunken driving. After the suspicion became known, Niemi informed the board that he did not consider that he could continue in his role as executive editor of Helsingin Sanomat.[9] On 5 April 2023, the District Court of Helsinki sentenced Niemi to a fine of one hundred daily fines for aggravated drunken driving, amounting to EUR 23,800.[10]
