Born in Swansea, Wales, Lewis was educated at Dynevor School, Swansea, at Balliol College, Oxford, from which he received an MA in Philosophy and Politics in 1977, and at St Antony's College, Oxford, from which he received a DPhil in Strategic Studies in 1981.
Deep political connections
In 1983 (and probably on other occasions) he attended a meeting of Le Cercle - and also parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee supposed to oversee the UK intelligence agencies MI5, MI6 and GCHQ.
In the UK Parliament, he actively pursues the retention and renewal of the British strategic nuclear deterrent, the Trident programme.
