Dr. Alexander "Alex" Krauer was a Swiss chemical company executive and Bilderberg Steering committee member. Krauer was one of the most influential business leaders in the region at the end of the 20th century.[1]

Background

Krauer was educated at the University of Basel and the International Management Institute in Geneva. He attended a Georgetown Leadership Seminar in 1984.

Career

He mainly had influence through the Basel-based chemical company Ciba-Geigy, for which he worked for 43 years. His grandfather and his father worked for the same company.[1]

After 19 years at the company, he rose to the Group Executive Board. In 1987, he succeeded Louis von Planta as president of Ciba.[2]

At the beginning of the 1990s, things were no longer going too smoothly for Ciba - and thus also for Krauer. Although he was still appreciated as a good communicator with a cooperative management style, the pharmaceutical division weakened. That's why Krauer decided to merge with local rival Sandoz, into what became Novartis. However it was less of a merger and more of a de facto takeover of Ciba by Sandoz. Three years after the merger, Krauer retired and handed over to Daniel Vasella.[1]

Krauer then started working for UBS. Shortly after the merger between the banking association and the banking company, a billion-dollar scandal broke out. Krauer stepped in for the then chairman of the Board of Directors Mathis Cabiallavetta, who had to resign. [1]

After that job, Krauer largely withdrew from the public.[1] Until the beginning of 2005 he was President of the University Council of the University of Basel.[3]

In 2017 he was a Honorary Chairman of Novartis AG.[1]
