CIA
Sweet, a Texas native, graduated from Columbia University in 1991 with a B.A. in political science, International Relations, and East Asian Studies.[2] From 1991 to 1993, Sweet was the directorate of operations for the Central Intelligence Agency. According to his biography on the Chertoff Group website, Sweet was involved in clandestine operations for the CIA.[3]
Goldman-Sachs
In 1994, Sweet began working as an investment banking analyst for Morgan Stanley;he moved to Goldman-Sachs in 1996, initially working in Asia until becoming a vice president with the company. Sweet spent 10 years at Goldman-Sachs[4], primarily working in Houston and in Hong Kong as an investment advisor.[5]
It is unclear whether these banking jobs were business cover for further CIA activities.
Department of Homeland Security
According to The Beaumont Enterprise, Sweet decided to leave the financial sector after the September 11, 2001 attacks.[6] In 2005, Sweet began working as the special assistant to the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, Michael Chertoff. During his time as a special assistant and deputy chief of staff, Sweet represented the department for interagency planning and worked to change the processes for intelligence briefings for Chertoff. He was also responsible for planning and coordinating Operation Jump Start, a National Guard deployment that aimed to reduce the number of individuals entering the U.S. without legal permission.[7] He became Chertoff's chief of staff in November 2006.[8]
Chertoff Group
In late 2009, Sweet joined Michael Chertoff in founding the Chertoff Group, a firm that is involved in business strategy, mergers, acquisitions and security service.[9][10] The Chertoff Group has offices in New York, London, Washington, D.C., Austin, Houston, and Menlo Park, California.
According to his bio on the Chertoff Group website, Sweet is also a Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) registered representative (series 7, 24, 63, 79) and registered representative of Chertoff Capital, LLC, a subsidiary of The Chertoff Group. Sweet is also a member of The Association for Corporate Growth National Capital Chapter, the nonprofit Gen Next and the Young Presidents' Organization (YPO). He is a senior fellow at the George Washington University Homeland Security Policy Institute, a member of the FBI's InfraGard Advisory Board and a senior fellow at theCenter for Naval Analysis.[11][12]
Texas Lyceum
From 2006 to 2009, Sweet served as the director of the Texas Lyceum, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Dallas, Texas. The Texas Lyceum is a organization aimed at "creating discussions on socio-political matters within Texas".[13]
Ted Cruz
Chad Sweet was named Ted Cruz's campaign chairman for Cruz's 2016 presidential campaign shortly after Cruz announced his candidacy on March 23, 2015.[14]
In 2021, Sweet called for Ted Cruz to be "denounced" after Cruz objected to the Electoral College results and questioned the validity of President-elect Joe Biden's victory.[15]
