Early Life

After studying economics with a focus on economic history at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), the bilingual (German/french) de Weck entered journalism as a business editor and Zurich correspondent for the Tribune de Genève. With Max Mabillard he published the bestseller Scandale au Crédit Suisse in 1977 about a financial scandal at the big bank Credit Suisse. In 1979 he moved to Zürich as business editor Weltwoche. From 1983 he worked for the Hamburg weekly newspaper die Zeit (central in the German part of the Bilderberg network) as a political editor, Paris correspondent, reporter and – after a year – as head of the economic department. In 1992 he returned to Zürich as editor-in-chief of the Tages-Anzeiger. In 1997 he moved again to Hamburg and die Zeit, this time as editor-in-chief.

From 2001 to 2010 Roger de Weck was a freelance journalist. He wrote for print media in Germany, France and Switzerland. He also regularly presented a television show on Swiss television. From 2004 to 2010 he was President of the Board of Trustees of the Geneva Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies. De Weck is a visiting lecturer at the College of Europe in Bruges and Warsaw/Natolin, member of the Foundation Board of the Aachen Charlemagne Prize, editor of the Körber Foundation's foreign policy book series Standpoints and honorary doctorate from the University of Lucerne (2006)[1] as well as the University of Freiburg[2]. In 2004 he received the Davos Media Prize.

On May 18, 2010, he was elected Director-General of Swiss Broadcasting Corporation with effect from January 1, 2011, succeeding Armin Walpen.[3] He was succeeded by Gilles Marchand on October 1, 2017.[4]

Roger de Weck lives in Zurich and Bern. He is married and the father of four children, including the political scientist Joseph de Weck, the lecturer and editor Margaux de Weck and the actress and author Laura de Weck. He is the son of the Swiss banker Philippe de Weck, who attended meetings of the deep state milieu Le Cercle several times in the 1970s.
