Future Labour MP? English writer and broadcaster who, with Carole Cadwalladr, was "unmasked as lap dogs for the security state.[1]

Paul Mason is an English writer and broadcaster on economics and social justice issues. He is also an alleged MI5 operative[2] whom The Grayzone exposed as having worked with Amil Khan to try to "destroy" them.[3]

He was Culture and Digital Editor of Channel 4 News,[4] becoming the programme's Economics Editor on 1 June 2014,[5] a post he formerly held on BBC2's Newsnight programme.[6]

On 1 June 2022, Mason announced his candidacy to be a Labour MP at the next election.[7] He was on the longlist in the Stretford and Urmston constituency in Greater Manchester,[8][9] but was not shortlisted.[10] In October 2022, Mason announced he was seeking the Labour nomination to contest the safe Sheffield Central seat at the next general election.[11]

In March 2023, he was seeking the Labour nomination in the new constituency of Mid and South Pembrokeshire.[12]

Opinions

In 2018 Paul Mason tweeted that we needed to be “prepared to accept” the UK government's official narrative about the attack on Sergei Skripal.[13]

On 31 July 2016, Paul Mason published a 5,000-word article "Labour: The Way Ahead" detailing his thoughts on Labour strategy post-24 September 2016, the date when the result of the leadership contest between Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith is scheduled to be announced.[14]

On 18 August 2016, Mason noted that Labour's Blairite wing had apparently shut up shop.[15]

In June 2022, he was described as pro NATO and pro war[16]:

The US blog, Grayzone, has published what it claims are leaked emails showing British journalist and ex-left Paul Mason discussing plans to involve the state to silence anti-war, anti-NATO media outlets. Mason has neither denied nor confirmed the veracity of these emails (although he has claimed they “may be altered or faked”). The leak would appear to show exchanges of emails between Mason and Amil Khan, the head of intelligence contractor Valent Projects. In the exchanges, ideas are discussed for financially and legally targeting Grayzone.[17]

In October 2022, Mason reportedly proposed an increase in military spending by Britain from the present 2 per cent to “between 3 and 5 per cent of our GDP,” an increase of around £65 billion a year.

The problem with this has been highlighted by the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI). It looked at the Tory government’s commitment to raise the arms bill to 3 per cent of GDP — much less than Mason is urging. RUSI calculates that the government will have to increase the military budget by 60 per cent in real terms to meet the target. Income tax would have to go up by 5p in the pound, or the VAT rate from 20 per cent to 25 per cent, it calculates.[18]

Academic

Mason is a visiting professor at the University of Wolverhampton.[19]

If Jeremy Corbyn wins on 24 September 2016, we should say to his opponents inside the Parliamentary Labour Party: end the passive resistance. We have something that neither Brown nor Miliband ever had, and which Blairism lost ten years ago. A story that makes sense, a strategy that can win, an unprecedented mass membership; and a leader who, in the face of intense pressure, gets stronger.

"Though they claim to be “peaceful”......by setting themselves up as the victims of genocide, the anti-vaxxers give themselves permission to threaten violence.....Those behind the “crime” are said to include governments and the World Economic Forum (WEF)" because the real fascists are the ones that oppose oppressive government mandates and forced injections.
