Education
After graduating in business administration from the Luigi Bocconi University of Economics in Milan, Passera completed his Master of Business Administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1980.
Banking Career
He then worked at McKinsey & Company for five years[3]. He then worked at Carlo De Benedetti's CIR Group until 1990, ending up as General Director[4]. In 1991 he became general director of the publishing house Arnoldo Mondadori Editore[5] and then of the media company Gruppo Editoriale L'Espresso. At the same time, he was co-chairman of the board of Olivetti from 1992 to 1996, a company that was significantly transformed during this time[6][7]. in 1996, Passera took over the management of Banco Ambrosiano, which he merged with the Milan Savings Bank in 1998 to form Banca Intesa[8].
In 1998 he was appointed head of the Italian Post Office. In the following four years, he restructured the company, whose services were also extended to banking. After the restructuring, during which around 20,000 jobs were lost, it made profits for the first time in 2002.[9] [10]
Passera returned to Banca Intesa as chairman of the board, which he merged in 2006 with the Turin-based credit institution Sanpaolo IMI to form the second largest Italian bank Intesa Sanpaolo.[11][12] In 2008 and 2009 he was involved in the re-establishment of the airline Alitalia.
Political Career
On 16 November 2011, Corrado Passera was appointed minister in the deep politician Mario Monti's "non-partisan" and "technocrat" government. He took over the leadership of the Ministry of Economic Development (Industry and Trade) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. In the latter ministry, a deputy minister carried out most of the official duties under Passera's supervision.[13][14]
On 23 February 2014, Corrado Passera founded the political movement Italia Unica[15][16] and he announced his intention to run for Mayor of Milan in the upcoming local elections. However, a year later, he withdrew from the mayoral race, simultaneously announcing his support for the official center-right coalition candidate, Stefano Parisi.[17] On 30 September 2016, the National Assembly of Italia Unica decided to dissolve the party.[18]
