Mikhail Borisovich Khodorkovsky was a Russian billionaire and former owner of Yukos, whose networth is estimated to be 500 million (2015).[1] He was arrested in 2003 and ousted in the following trial.
Arrest
Most people subscribe to the explanation that he was cut of from power by the government under Vladimir Putin,[2] who started to reign in the oligarchs in order to stop the decline of living standards. Unlike others, Khodorkovsky did not go along, which lead to his prosecution and imprisonment in the Russian Federation for corruption.
This provoked international condemnations. In 2005 the US Senate passed S.R. 322,[3] co-sponsored by Joe Biden, Barack Obama, and John McCain, which stated:
"Russia has not accorded Mikhail Khodorkovsky and Platon Lebedev fair treatment under the laws of the Russian Federation"
Directly after arrest, before the trial, he gave his shares in Yukos Oil to Jacob Rothschild of the Rothschild dynasty.[4]
Activities
In 2002, together with Stuart Gerrish, Henry Kissinger and Mikhail Borisovich Piotrovsky, Khodorkovsky founded the Open Russia Foundation (later renamed the Future Of Russia Foundation.[5]
