Christa Markwalder is a Swiss politician who attended the 2016 Bilderberg meeting.
Markwalder was President of the pro-EU New Swiss European Movement from 2006 to 2014. She was selected a Young Leader of the American-Swiss Foundation in 2006 and a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2011.[1]
Career
Markwalder studied law and ecology at the University of Bern. She then worked as an assistant at the Institute for European and International Economic Law at the University of Bern. Since January 2008 she has been working as a lawyer for Zurich Financial Services.[2][1]
Markwalder joined the Young Liberals and sat in the city council of Burgdorf between 1999 and 2002. In 2002, she was elected to the Grand Council of Berne while her father, Hans-Rudolf Markwalder, conceded defeat in the same elections.[3]
In 2003, Markwalder resigned from the Grand Council as she was elected to the National Council, and her father assumed her vacant Grand Council seat.[3] Markwalder was re-elected to the National Council in 2007, 2011 and 2015.
After the election of Simonetta Sommaruga to the Federal Council (the government), Markwalder ran for the vacant Bernese seat in the upper house Council of States in February 2011. She finished in third place in the first round and subsequently decided to withdraw from the race.[4]
Markwalder was elected President of the National Council, colloquially referred to as the "highest Swiss person" but it is an honorary title, on 30 November 2015.[3]
She chaired the Parliamentary Association Switzerland-USA and co-chaired various parliamentary groups on renewable energy, ecologically sustainable economies, and relations with Eastern Europe, such as Switzerland-Ukraine. [1]
She is president of the think tank Swiss Association for Foreign Policy.
Lobbyism
In June 2013, Markwalder asked the Federal Council about Switzerland's relations with Kazakhstan.[5] According to a report in the Neue Zürcher Zeitung, the interpellation was written by the PR company Burson-Marsteller and its content was heavily revised in Kazakhstan.[6] Markwalder denied having known that Kazakhstan was involved in the formulation of the text. Markwalder passed on non-public commission documents to the PR company in preparation for the question.[7]
On January 25, 2015, the daily SonntagsZeitung revealed that she was chairing the management of the “Swiss German Club”, an institution specializing in facilitating procedures for Swiss companies wishing to relocate their activities to Germany.[8]
