Finn Bergesen Jr. [1] was a Norwegian civil servant and businessman who attended the 2001 Bilderberg meeting when director-general of the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise. In 2003 he agreed that "the EU is the only solution for Norway".[2]
Education
Finn Bergesen graduated in law in 1973.[3]
Career
He worked in the Ministry of Fisheries and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1973 and 1983, and then became secretary-general of the fishery organization Norges Fiskarlag. He remained so until 1989, and was then chief executive in the fishery organization Norges Sildesalgslag from 1990 to 1995. From 1995 to 1998 he was the chief executive officer of Kavli Holding, and from 1999 to 2009 he was the director-general of the Confederation of Norwegian Enterprise.[4][5]
In 2003 he agreed that "the EU the only solution for Norway". "What is so special about us that it makes sense to stand outside? It is very unsatisfactory to be lagging behind everything that is happening in Europe and at the same time to conduct a special Norwegian policy. The preservation of the right of self-determination, which has been the main argument of the no-side, has now become a significant argument for entering the EU. We will to a much greater extent be able to take care of the special Norwegian by being part of the community. If we do not go in, we will only have to follow everything that happens in Europe and lose the opportunity to cultivate affairs important for Norway. We have already ceded so much power to the WTO, among others, that there is not much left to have autonomy over. The self-governing nation-state no longer exists. We can no longer operate and think as we did 20-30 years ago."
He was a proponent of eliminating tariffs and non-tariff barriers through the World Trade Organization.[6]
