Dr. Frans Adriaan de Graaff was private secretary of Prince Bernhard. He attended early Bilderberg meetings.
Background
De Graaff was a member of the Dutch Patrician family De Graaff and a son of lawyer Jan Joost de Graaff (1873-1935) and Anna Ernesta Hermine Wüppermann (1882-1937). His father's sister, Anna Margaretha de Graaff (1875-1943), was married in 1913 to Henricus Cato van Kleffens (1861-1942), the father of Minister Eelco van Kleffens (1894-1983), making Minister van Kleffens and De Graaff cousins in practice.
De Graaff obtained his doctorate in Rotterdam in 1930 with a doctorate in commercial sciences for his dissertation Relation of government and parliament. In 1932 he married Johanna Hendrina van Publiekhuijsen with whom he had a son.
Career
In 1946 he compiled a "Chronicle of War and Occupation". He then worked at Heineken, then became director of the Van Vollenhoven brewery and finally secretary of the board of trustees of the Netherlands School of Economics, where he also obtained his doctorate.
From November 1, 1950, he was private secretary to Prince Bernhard as the successor of Mr. Jan Thomassen (1908-1951) . In 1951 he published a travelogue of Bernhard's visit to South America.[1] On April 12, 1962, De Graaff was involved in a car accident near the Tarzanbocht (Utrecht), which initially did not seem serious. A little later he had to be hospitalized and in May he was temporarily replaced in his position by Henri Fock (1926-1993) when it turned out that the consequences were more serious and from which he would also die a few months later. De Graaff remained Bernhard's official secretary until his death.
De Graaff was appointed commander in the House Order of Orange on November 1, 1960.
