Andreas Carl Gerwig was a Swiss politician (Social Democratic Party).[1]
Background
Andreas Gerwig was son of the legal scholar and university professor Max Gerwig (1889–1965). He studied law at the University of Basel and Paris. In 1953 he received his PhD.
Career
From 1955 he worked as a lawyer.
From 1957 to 1967 Gerwig was a member of the municipal council of the city of Basel and from 1960 to 1964 he was a member of the constitutional council of the Canton of Basel. From 1964 to 1970 he represented the Social Democratic Party.
From 1967 to 1983, Gerwig was a member of the National Council, where he formed the so-called "gang of four" together with Helmut Hubacher, Walter Renschler and Lilian Uchtenhagen, which had a significant impact on the party politics of the SP.[2] Gerwig's political focus was legal policy, media policy and the Jura conflict. From 1981 to 1983 he chaired the Commission for a New Marriage Law.
From 1984 to 1997, Gerwig was a member of the Education Council of the Canton of Basel and from 1999 the Basel city Council. From 1966 to 1988 he was also a staff representative on the Board of Directors of the Basel Theater, President of the Swiss Film Center and a member of the Board of Trustees of the Max Frisch Foundation.
