Étienne C. A. G. G. M. J. de La Vallée Poussin Le Roux de Bretagne was a Belgian politician who attended the first Bilderberg and three more in the 1950s. In the European field, he campaigned from 1959 within the Action Committee for the United States of Europe (Monnet Committee) and became president of the Belgian Council of the European Movement.[1]

Background

He was a son of Xavier de la Vallée Poussin and Evelyne de Francquen and was the adopted son of Blanche Le Roux de Bretagne. He married Jacqueline Thibaut de Maisières (1920-2007) in 1979 (he was 76 at the time).

Education

He received a doctorate in law (1925) and a licentiate in economics (1932) from the University of Louvain. He was associated with the Institut de recherches économiques et sociales[2], like Robert Triffin et de Paul van Zeeland.[3]

He became a lawyer and company administrator.

Career

He became politically active through his election as a municipal councillor in Sint-Joost-ten-Node (1938-1946).

In 1946 he was elected senator for the arrondissement of Brussels. He sat until 1961. He was then appointed (specifically, elected by the state senators of his language group) senator until 1968. He was also a member of the Consultative Assembly of the Council of Europe.

De la Vallée Poussin was particularly active in all kinds of institutions and associations that sought European unification. He was vice-president of the College of Europe in Bruges.

On 19 November 1953 he voted in the Senate as the only CVP member for the application of the European Convention on Human Rights in the Belgian Congo.[4]
