Pierre Uri was a French economist and collaborator of Jean Monnet who played a key role in the development of the 1957 Treaty of Rome.[1] He attended the Bilderberg 1963, Bilderberg 1969 and Bilderberg 1975 meetings.
Background
Pierre Uri, born into a family of teachers, studied at the École Normale Supérieure (ENA). He graduated third in the philosophy class of 1933.
Career
From 1939 to 1947, he worked for François Perroux at ISEA, Institute of Applied Economic Science. From 1947 to 1952, he gave a course in public finance at the ENA. At the same time, he entered the planning services (directed by Monnet), where he was rapporteur for a balance sheet commission whose objective was to analyze the dysfunctions of the plan generating inflation and financial problems. He also took part (in early 1948) in extensive exchanges of views with Monnet (and other French planners), English officials such as Stafford Cripps and even Clement Attlee, on French planning methods. These conversations highlighted the political incapacity of the English to think of an engagement on the continent and contributed to their rejection of the of France action towards a collaboration with Germany.[2]
From 1950 to 1957, he worked alongside Jean Monnet and had a decisive role in the writing of the Spaak report and in the elaboration of the Treaty of Rome.[3][4][5] From 1962 to 1966, he was responsible for studies at the Institut de l'Atlantique, an institute that promoted economic, political, and cultural relations among NATO members. In the 1960s, he was a member of the think-tank Club Jean Moulin. In the 1970s, he was an associate professor at the University of Paris-Dauphine.
Pierre Uri died in Paris, in July 1992, at the age of 80.
