Josef Tage Andersen was a Danish bank director.
Biography
Andersen started in banking in 1943, and moved to the Danish bank Landmandsbanken 1951 after a study stay in the UK. In 1980 he became CEO of the bank, which had now changed its name to Danske Bank. He was the CEO until his retirement in 1990. In 1986, the bank's later director Peter Straarup was appointed to the Executive Board. Andersen left the director's chair to Knud Sørensen.
He was known for his cautious policy, which proved sensible due to the 1980s financial sector problems. Andersen was the man behind several bank mergers, concentrating the Danish banking world in fewer hands, making Danske Bank to Scandinavia's largest financial house at the time.
He was chairman of the board of Danske Bank in the period 1980 - 1990, which ended with the bank being merged with Handelsbanken and Provinsbanken, into what came to be called Danske Bank[1].
Andersen was a member of several boards; Among other things, he was chairman of the Airline SAS from 1990-1994. He was also a central figure in the Danish shipping company A.P. Møller-Maersk, not least because of his good relationship with the shipping tycoon and fellow Bilderberger Maersk McKinney-Moller. He was a member of the European Bankers Round Table.[2]
