Sputnik News (formerly Voice of Russia and RIA Novosti) is a news agency, news website platform and radio broadcast service established by the Russian government-owned news agency Rossiya Segodnya.[1] Headquartered in Moscow, Sputnik News has regional editorial offices in Washington, Cairo, Beijing, Singapore, London and Edinburgh, focuses on global politics and economics and is geared towards a non-Russian audience.[2] According to the New York Times, Sputnik engages in bias and disinformation,[3] and has widely been described as a Russian propaganda outlet.[4][5][6]

Sputnik News currently operates news websites, featuring reporting and commentary, in over 30 languages including English, Spanish, Polish, Serbian, and several others. The websites also house over 800 hours of radio broadcasting material each day and its newswire service runs around the clock.[7][8][9]

Criticism

Ben Nimmo (of the Institute of Statecraft) wrote as a “defence analyst” in The Times that Sputnik News is “an instrument of Russian state power, not an independent journalism outlet.”[10]
