Background and Education
His father was an executive at the BNP Paribas. Born in Mulhouse, he is the 3rd of a family of 6 children.[1]
Benoît Potier went to the Sainte-Geneviève private high school. He is an engineer graduated from the Ecole Centrale Paris in 1979.
He followed the Executive MBA program at INSEAD in 1990, when working at Air liquide. He also participated in the INSEAD Management training program and the Wharton International Forum.[1]
Career
He started as an engineer in the Research and Development division of Air Liquide in 1981. In 1994 he became director of large industry markets. In 1995, as deputy director, he was in charge of the group's development and large industry operations. In 1997, he became chief executive officer of the Air Liquide Group, then chairman of the management board in 2001, before being appointed Chairman and Chief Executive officer in 2006.[2]
He is also president of the European Roundtable of Industrialists[3], member of the Audit Committee and the Supervisory Board of Michelin[4], director of the Danone group, member of the board of directors of the French Association of Private Companies (AFEP), member of the board of directors of the lobby group Circle of Industry, director of the think tank "La Fabrique de l'Industrie", director of ANSA (National Association of Joint-stock Companies)[5], director of the Central School of arts and manufactures, member of the INSEAD France Council[6] and member of the European part of the Trilateral Commission. Benoît Potier was also appointed President of the Air Liquide Foundation when it was created in 2008.[7] He held this position until March 30, 2017, when he became the administrator, leaving the presidency to Jean-Marc de Royere.[8]
In the space of twenty years, Benoît Potier more than doubled Air Liquide's turnover, doubled the number of employees to 66,400, tripled the number of customers and quintupled the market capitalization.[9]
He co-chaired the French National Hydrogen council[10] and vice-chaired the World Hydrogen Council in the creation of which he participated[11].
On June 1, 2022, he handed over the general management of Air Liquide to his deputy François Jackow, while remaining chairman of the board of directors[12].
His retirement amounts to 650,000 euros per year, to which are added approximately 200,000 euros annually as part of the group's retirement savings plan and an annual remuneration of 800,000 euros as chairman of the board of directors.[13] Its annual dividends amount to 1.5 million euros in 2021.[14]
He married in 1984 and has 3 daughters.
