Pierre Commin was a French socialist politician. Strongly anti-communist and pro-NATO and European unity[1], he attended his first and last two Bilderberg meetings in 1957. He was an informant for US diplomats[2][3][4]

Career

Pierre Commin, an engineer by training, joined the French Section of the Workers' International (SFIO) in 1930 and quickly became secretary of the socialist section of Montreuil.

He was part of the resistance|, where he became is departmental head of the resistance group Ceux de la Résistance. He was then vice-president of the departmental committee for the liberation of Seine-et-Oise.

After the war, he was then elected general councilor of Mantes-Gassicourt (currently Mantes-la-Jolie) from 1945 to 1949, then deputy, still under the socialist label, to the First Constituent Assembly. He was defeated during the legislative elections of 1946.[5]

He devotes himself to the internal debates of the socialist party. During the 38th congress of the SFIO, he signed the motion Redressement, which brings together behind Guy Mollet the opponents of the outgoing leadership. He then sits on the steering committee.[5]

After the resignation of Yves Dechézelles, he became, in June 1947, deputy secretary general of the SFIO, and therefore number 2 of the party, behind Guy Mollet. He became a virulent opponent of the communist party.

In 1952, he was elected Senator for Seine-et-Oise.[6]

From 1956 to 1957, he was acting director of the SFIO, while Guy Mollet was prime minister. As such, he meets secretly several times with representatives of the Algerian independence movement FLN, without these meetings leading to progress.

He takes a hard line against the party members who criticize the brutal repression against the Algerian nationalists.

In 1958, however, he opposed Guy Mollet and voted, like the majority of Socialist parliamentarians, against the inauguration of De Gaulle. However, he refused to organize these internal opponents into groups or fractions, and even refused Mollet's proposal to resign from the party leadership.[5]

Death

Commin died suddenly, reportedly of a heart attack, in June 1958.
