Robert Habeck is a German writer and politician who has been co-leader of Alliance '90/The Greens since 2018 alongside Annalena Baerbock.[1] In 2019, he was reported as being a possible chancellor candidate.[2] After the 2021 German parliamentary election, he became Vice Chancellor of Germany, as well as the first Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection.[3]

Less than a year after taking office, he set the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution on two ministry officials when he did not like the answers he was getting regarding the German energy supply, accusing them of being Russian moles.[4] It was speculated that this was meant to intimidate; older officials know of no such occurence in the past.[5] He became edgy when he was asked about the matter in 2024.[6]

Opinions

On sanctions against Russia and the ramifications for the people living in the European Union:

“But of course we will harm ourselves. That is absolutely clear. The point of sanctions is that a society, in this case the European society, bears a burden. The economy, the consumers. Everyone will have to make a contribution.

It is inconceivable that sanctions are without consequences for one's own economy or one's own prices. We will have higher inflation, higher energy prices and stress on the economy. And we are ready as Europeans to bear this to help Ukraine.

It's not possible to get this done for free. There will be hardships, and the hardships will have to be borne.”
Robert Habeck (03 May 2022)  [7]
