George Monbiot (born 27 January 1963) is a British writer known for his environmental and political activism who writes a weekly column for The Guardian.
In January 2018, journalist Jonathan Cook accused George Monbiot of "using his prominent platforms, at the Guardian and on social media, to discredit critical thinkers on the left – not with reasoned arguments, but by impugning their integrity."[1]
Contents
Grenfell Tower fire
In a Guardian article in July 2017, George Monbiot wrote:
- "On 14 June 2017, while the Grenfell Tower was smouldering, a meeting of the Red Tape Initiative panel decided that "on this occasion" they would not recommend the removal of the EU Construction Products Regulation, which seeks to protect people from fire, and restricts the kind of cladding that can be used."[2]
He followed this up with a video explaining why the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire are “cowards”.[3]
Arrest Blair
In January 2010, Monbiot founded the ArrestBlair.org website, which offers a reward to people attempting a peaceful citizen's arrest of former British prime minister Tony Blair for alleged crimes against peace.[4]
September 11, 2001
George Monbiot is a supporter of the US government's official narrative in the case of 9-11.[5]
Afghanistan
In August 2021, Monbiot posed the question "Who’s to blame for the Afghanistan chaos?" and proceeded to answer:
Everyone is to blame for the catastrophe in Afghanistan, except the people who started it. Yes, Joe Biden screwed up by rushing out so chaotically. Yes, Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab failed to make adequate and timely provisions for the evacuation of vulnerable people. But there is a frantic determination in the media to ensure that none of the blame is attached to those who began this open-ended war without realistic aims or an exit plan, then waged it with little concern for the lives and rights of the Afghan people: the then US president, George W Bush, the British prime minister Tony Blair and their entourages.[6]
Campaigner
Monbiot is the founder of The Land is Ours, a peaceful campaign for the right of access to the countryside and its resources in the United Kingdom. His most recent project was a concept album that he wrote and toured with the musician Ewan McLennan, called Breaking the Spell of Loneliness.[7] He is the author of a number of books, including Captive State: The Corporate Takeover of Britain (2000) and Feral: Searching for Enchantment on the Frontiers of Rewilding (2013).

Document:Whenever it truly matters, from Assange to Corbyn, George Monbiot cripples the left | Article | 11 October 2022 | Jonathan Cook | George Monbiot is treated by much of the left as a figurehead, one whose environmentalism earns him credibility and credit with the left on foreign policy issues, from Syria to Ukraine, in which he echoes the same talking points one hears from Keir Starmer to Liz Truss. While on matters at home, like Assange and Corbyn, he sucks the wind out of the left’s sails. |
