Willem Elmert "Wim" Scherpenhuijsen Rom was a Dutch banker and soldier.[1] He participated in the 1983 Bilderberg meeting.

Family

W. E. Scherpenhuijsen Rom is a descendant of the family Rom included in the Dutch patriciate and a son of engineer Elmert Scherpenhuijsen Rom (1888-1980) and Marianne Content (1885-1986). His brother Elmert (1912-1944) was an official at the population register in Amsterdam and died in German captivity in Königswartha; then Willem added the name Elmert as middle name in 1945.

He married violinist Verena (Vreni) Kaufmann in 1955 with whom he had four children. He was then the life partner of soprano Arleen Augér (1939-1993) until her death. In 1998, he married a musicologist. His youngest son is married to the director of the Van Gogh Museum, Emilie Gordenker.

Education

Rom first attended officer training at the Royal Military Academy in Breda and last served as a captain in the Royal Air Force. He trained as a chartered accountant.

Career

He left military service as a controller in 1967 to work at the Nederlandsche Middenstandsbank. After eight years, he was inducted into the bank's Board of Directors to become its chairman in 1976. He supervised the merger of the NMB with the Postbank N. V. in 1989, and then became chairman of the board of Directors of the NMB Postbank Group, which he remained until 1991. In the latter position, he oversaw the merger with Nationale-Nederlanden and became chairman of the board of Directors of the resulting ING Group in 1992.[2] After only a few weeks, he had to resign because of a scandal of co-directors around private trading with insider knowledge in shares of which he would have had knowledge. Despite this, Rom was considered incorruptible.

Rom was also chairman of the Dutch Association of Banks from 1991 to 1994. He then was chairman of the supervisory board or president-commissioner of several large companies, such as Pink Roccade, SDU and Haskoning, until 2002. He also held a number of public functions.

Rom had a great musical interest and was president of the Friends of the Concertgebouw. He was a knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion.
