Raffaele Girotti was an Italian company manager, entrepreneur and politician.[1]
Career
Educated an aeronautical engineer, he joined Snam after the war and worked on the construction of the first methane pipelines. He became one of Eugenio Cefis' trusted men and gradually took on more and more responsible positions in the companies of the ENI group. In 1968 he became vice president of Montedison, representing ENI as the company's biggest shareholder.[2]
In 1971, with the transfer of Cefis to Montedison, Girotti replaced him as president of ENI.[3] The disagreements between the two groups regarding the chemical development programs led to a separation between Cefis and Girotti, who tried to reassert ENI's control over Montedison by opposing Cefis's choices. Under the presidency of Girotti, ENI sought to develop technologies for the protection of the environment in particular. In 1973, ENI led by Girotti was accused of having attempted to acquire further Montedison shares through trust companies domiciled abroad, and Girotti resigned from office in 1975.
He was a senator in the ranks of the Christian Democrats between 1976 and 1979. He subsequently retired to private life.
