Gerard J. Kleisterlee is a Dutch business executive who attended the 2002 and 2006 Bilderberg meetings as CEO of Phillips.
Background
Gerard Kleisterlee was born in 1946 in Ludwigsburg near Stuttgart to a German mother and a Dutch father. Kleisterlee grew up in the Netherlands.[1]
Education
He completed his training as an electrical engineer at the Eindhoven University of Technology.[2] Like his father, he worked for Philips. He received his MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.[3]
From 1981 to 1986 he was General Manager of the Philips Professional Audio Product Group. In 1986, Kleisterlee joined Philips Components. In 1994, he became the director of Philips Display Components, responsible for the worldwide business. In 1996 he became Head of Philips Taiwan and Regional Manager of Philips Components for the Asian region. From September 1997 to June 1998, he was also responsible for all Philips activities in China.[2] From 2001 to 2011, Kleisterlee was President and CEO of Philips, before he in April 2011 handed over his duties to his successor Frans van Houten.[4] Under his leadership, Philips shifted its focus to lifestyle and health. This led to the sale of the semiconductors divisions in 2006.
On July 26, 2011, he became chairman of the Vodafone Group.[5][6] In May 2020, Jean-François van Boxmeer took over the post.[7]
Kleisterlee was a member of the Supervisory Board of ASML from 2015 to 2023, a Dutch high-tech company and supplier of machines for the semiconductor industry.[8]
In 2006, Kleisterlee was named "Europe Businessman of the Year" by Fortune Magazine.[9]
Kleisterlee is married and has three grown-up children.[10]
