Career
He first worked in education, before he was elected to the Second Chamber of the Dutch Parliament in 1968 at the age of 34. There he became the political spokesman of his party for foreign policy and defense policy affairs. In addition, he also pursued European policy and advocated increasing cooperation between the EC/EU states.[1]
At the end of the 1970s, Dankert changed his field of activity from the Dutch Second Chamber to the European Parliament, whose fate he helped to determine as president in the years 1982 to 1984. In the third cabinet of Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers (1989-1994), he held the post of State Secretary for European Affairs. He then returned to the European Parliament as a member of Parliament, a post he retained until the end of his career in 1999.[1]
Dankert distinguished himself there mainly in budget debates and worked as a member of various parliamentary committees of the Council of Europe, NATO and the WEU. In his last years as a Member of the European Parliament of his party, he was particularly committed to Turkey's future accession to the EU.
Dankert was married to his wife Paulette since 1962, together they had a son and two daughters. On June 21, 2003, Piet Dankert died at the age of 69 in France, his second home.[1]
