Jefferson "Jeff" Sessions is the Republican Party's US Senator from Alabama.[1] In 2009, The Guardian said he was "known to be one of the most consistently conservative legislators on Capitol Hill."[2]

Career

US Attorney General

Jeff Sessions became United States Attorney General on February 9, 2017, under Donald Trump. On 10 March 2017 he asked the remaining 46 chief federal prosecutors left over from the Obama administration to resign.[3] In May[citation needed] he asked James Comey to resign.[4]

In January 2018, he announced he would allow federal prosecutors to crack down on marijuana businesses in states that have legalized the drug, a decision which resulted in a strong bipartisan backlash, "splitting the GOP and bolstering Democrats and others who favor legalization."[5]

Cheney Loophole

Full article: Cheney Loophole

A January 2017 article entitled "How Jeff Sessions Profited from Introducing a Fracking Exemption for Drinking Water Rules" suggested Sessions and his family profited from introducing the "Cheney Loophole" to exempt the fracking industry from the Safe Drinking Water Act.[6]
