Jacques de Bourbon Busset, Count of Busset, was a French writer and diplomat, and member of the French Academy[1]. When he attended the October 1957 Bilderberg he was former Deputy Head of Robert Schuman’s Private Office. In this capacity, he aided in the development of the Schuman Plan for an European Community.
Background
Descendant of the barons of Busset (senior non-dynast branch of the Capetians, descended from the Dukes of Bourbon), Jacques de Bourbon Busset is the son of François de Bourbon, Count of Busset, and Guillemette de Colbert-Chabanais (daughter of General Pierre Émile Arnaud Edouard de Colbert-Chabannais). After studying at the Lycée Henri-IV, he entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1932. Passed the Quai d'Orsay competition for foreign service, and became an embassy attaché in Europe. Jacques de Bourbon Busset participated as an officer in the Second World War. Taken prisoner, he was detained in Germany and tried twice to escape. In August 1944, General de Gaulle appointed him President of the French Red Cross. He then began a long and brilliant diplomatic career.
Post-war career
In 1948, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Cabinet of Robert Schuman, Minister for Foreign Affairs, then Director of Cabinet. In 1952 he became director general of cultural relations with foreign countries. In December 1956, he decided to put an end to his professional activities to devote himself solely to writing. Inspired by his wife, Laurence Ballande (daughter of Captain Charles Ballande), he wrote Le Livre de Laurence.
Living in the Château du Saussay and mayor of Ballancourt-sur-Essonne from 1956 to 1965, he ran the farm with his wife. He becomes national president of the Secours Catholique in 1961 and Vice-President of the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, in the founding of which he actively participated. He participated in the work of the Center for Prospective Studies founded by Gaston Berger. He was a columnist for the newspaper La Croix for a long time .
From 1969 , he retired to his property in Haute-Provence in Salernes to dedicated himself to his writing career.
He was elected to the French Academy on June 4, 1981. In 1984 his wife Laurence died; he then returned to settle in Ballancourt.
He is the father of Hélène, Charles, Robert and Jean de Bourbon. Charles de Bourbon, current count of Busset, was mayor of Ballancourt-sur-Essonne from 1998 to 2014.[2]
