The Lycée Henri IV is one of the most famous lycées in France, in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, near the Latin Quarter.
The Lycée Henri IV is considered one of the most demanding and prestigious secondary schools in France. It is known for its excellent results in the baccalauréat (at the end of secondary education), and in the concours, the selection procedures for the Grandes écoles, France's elite universities, especially in the humanities subjects.
Overview
The Lycée Henri IV comprises a collège (four-year intermediate school), the actual lycée (three-year high school) and the classes préparatoires (preparatory classes) for application to the grandes écoles and has a total of about 2500 students.
The collège is attended by about 600 students. Because of its good reputation and privileged location in a posh neighborhood near the Sorbonne, most of its students come from "better" backgrounds, often the children of university professors.
Unlike the Collège, the Lycée's students are selected for their academic achievement and come from schools throughout Paris and the surrounding area. About 10 to 12 percent of the students come from declared problem areas. Due to the strict admission requirements, the school achieves well above average success rates in the Baccalauréat, which almost all its students pass.
