'There is no money': Javier Milei delivers Argentines painful truth in maiden speech

Milei, raised a Catholic converted to Judaism in 2021, as his presidential ambitions got closer to fulfillment. The Sephardic leader Rabbi Wahnish guided him through the study of Torah. "Seeking common ground between his vision of radical libertarianism and the prophecy of the Old Testament", Milei's casual interest morphed into a regular religious practice. Wahnish was later appointed Argentina's ambassador to Israel under Milei.[1]

In February 2024, Milei met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who thanked the him for moving his nation's embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, one of a handful of nations to do so. Milei also supported Israel's right to "self-defense" in Gaza. I have been committed since day one to making sure that my first diplomatic visit as president would be to the State of Israel. Here I am, keeping my promise now," Milei said upon his arrival to Tel Aviv.[2]

During his Israel visit, he also obliquely called for for the destruction of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and rebuilding the 'Third Temple' in its place.[3][4]

In February 2024, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen voiced strong support to the policies implemented by Javier Milei's government, praising its approach and Argentina's "economic transition". Both IMF leader Kristalina Georgieva and her second-in-command Gita Gopinath also praised Milei's economic program.[5]

On April 4, 2024, Milei and Gen. Laura Richardson, the commander of the U.S. Southern Command (SouthCom), held a meeting in Ushuaia, the southernmost city Argentina. During a speech to military personnel from both countries, Milei reiterated his willingness to forge a "strategic alliance" with the United States and its allies, suggesting that SouthCom will participate in an "Integrated Naval Base." This naval base will include a port for ship repair and replenishment, and will be the closest facility to Antarctica and "the gateway to the white continent," Milei said.[6]

On April 19, 2024, Argentina formally requested to join NATO as a "global partner". "Argentina plays an important role in Latin America," NATO's Deputy General Secretary Mircea Geoana said at the NATO headquarters. "Closer political and practical cooperation could benefit us both."[7]

In May 2024, Milei met with "the owners of four of the 10 companies with the highest market capitalisations in the world" during a trip to the United States, the CEOs of Facebook/Meta, Google, Apple and OpenAI.[8] In June 2024, Milei announced plans involving having Facebook/Meta AI algorithms educate Argentinian children. "Meta has an entire system in place to train human capital, to train people so that, let’s say, they can build a career," said Milei, adding that the government in Buenos Aires will start talks with the company to implement artificial intelligence in the education of our children". He also hinted as using Google to "reform" the state with artificial intelligence[9] Independent journalist Whitney Webb commented that "Outsourcing the public sector to Silicon Valley is not 'libertarian', SV is a cartel run by US military/intelligence."[10]
