The Aqsa Mosque is the main congregational mosque or prayer hall in the Al-Aqsa mosque compound in the Old City of Jerusalem. Since the beginning of the ongoing Israeli occupation of the West Bank, the mosque has remained under the independent administration of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf; an organ of the Jordanian government.
The compound houses two holy places - the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock, which is a seventh-century structure where the Prophet Muhammad is believed to have ascended to heaven. The site became a matter of concern after East Jerusalem went under the control of Israel after the Six-Day War in 1967.[1]
Excavations
A number of excavations have been carried out close to the compound,[2] which has led to speculation on the Arab side that these are meant to initiate the destruction of the structure to make room for the construction of the Third Temple.[3][4]
