Virginio Rognoni is an Italian politician, lawyer and academic. As Italian Minister of the Interior during the Years of Lead, attended Bilderberg/1982, accompanied by Carlos Aritario.

Early Life

Rognoni graduated from the Ugo Foscolo Liceo Classico in Pavia. He distinguished himself in anti-fascist activities from a young age, during the war. During his university studies he was a student of the historic Collegio Ghislieri in Pavia (1946-47) and graduated in law in November 1947 from the University of Pavia. He was subsequently a Fulbright Fellow at Yale University between 1949 and 1950, a significant event that indicates the US interest in him. He became professor of procedural law institutions at the faculty of law of the University of Pavia, and practiced the profession of lawyer.

Career and political positions in DC

He joined and became an important exponent of the Christian Democrats, being elected city councilor in Pavia from 1960 to 1964 and deputy mayor as well as city planning councilor from 1964 to 1967. Later he landed in national politics, managing to be elected member to Parliament for seven terms (from 1968 to 1994). He was appointed vice president of the Chamber of Deputies from 1976 to 1978.

After the resignation of Francesco Cossiga as interior minister following the assassination of Aldo Moro, he was appointed in his place, remaining in office from 1978 to 1983. As a minister, he faced the difficult years of armed struggle and terrorist violence (the so-called years of lead). Under his ministry, there were more than 200 terrorist organizations active in Italy and in 1979 there was a record number of 659 attacks. Among his most significant reforms is the demilitarization of the State Police, implemented in 1981.[1]

After his experience as a minister he became president of the parliamentary group in the Chamber of the Christian Democrats. He was then appointed minister of justice in the second Craxi government and in the sixth Fanfani government (from 17 April 1987 to 29 July 1987) and minister of defense in the sixth and seventh Andreotti government (from 26 July 1990 to 28 June 1992).

After his post as minister of defense, the years when the postwar party system ened followed, a crisis triggered by the investigations of Clean Hands and the trial of Giulio Andreotti for mafia connections. Rognoni suffered the effects of the political revolution of the nineties and ended his parliamentary career in 1994.

Other

Virginio Rognoni was president of the Commission for human rights of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers , president of the National Society of Italian-Arab friendship, president of the National Center for Prevention and Social Defense (CNPDS) of Milan and of the Giancarlo Puecher cultural center in Milan and also a member of the executive committee of the Aspen Institute.

In 1981 he received the " Grand Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany " in West Germany, in recognition of his action in the fight against terrorism.
