Esperanza Aguirre y Gil de Biedma is a Spanish politician. She was President of the Autonomous Community of Madrid from 2003 to 2012 and President of the Partido Popular Madrid from 2004 to 2016.

On 24 April 2017, she resigned from all her remaining offices after her the imprisonment of her former right-hand man, Ignacio González (also her successor as President of Madrid) for misappropriation of public funds in the Lezo scandal[1] .

Early life

Aguirre was born in Madrid on 3 January 1952, being the eldest daughter of José Luis Aguirre Borrell, a noted lawyer, and Piedad Gil de Biedma Vega de Seoane, the sister of the poet Jaime Gil de Biedma.[2] She studied in the La Asunción School and in the British Council School of Madrid and earned a degree in Law at the Complutense University of Madrid in 1974.[3]

In 1974, Aguirre married Fernando Ramírez de Haro,[4] 15th Count of Murillo, 16th Count of Bornos (Grandee of Spain), whom with she has had two sons: Fernando (born 1976) and Álvaro (born 1980).

Career

After studying law, Aguirre initially pursued a civil service career before becoming Minister of Education and Science (1996-1999) under the first government of José María Aznar. From 1999 to 2002 she was President of the Senate of Spain. From 2003 she was President of the Autonomous Region of Madrid; in September 2012 she resigned "for health reasons" after a corruption scandal. In 2004 she became leader of the conservative Partido Popular (PP) in the Madrid region.

In March 2015 she was nominated as the PP's candidate for the post of mayor of Madrid for the municipal elections taking place at the end of May 2015, but narrowly lost to Manuela Carmena, who was nominated by the left-wing parties PSOE and Podemos.

On February 14, 2016, Esperanza Aguirre resigned as President of the PP of the Autonomous Region of Madrid due to serious corruption allegations against the party. At a press conference she explained her step with the following words: "I spoke to Rajoy and he understands this move. Corruption kills us all. People don't want more, people want gestures and my gesture means that I take political responsibility. I wanted Francisco Granados as Secretary General of the Madrid PP and the fact that he is still in prison means that he has done something serious. I am not the main suspect but I bear the political responsibility."[5][6]
