Christopher J. Elias is President of the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Previously he worked for the Population Council and PATH, He participated in the notorious 2019 Event 201 pandemic exercise.[1]
Background
Dr. Elias holds an MD from Creighton University, having completed postgraduate training in internal medicine at the University of California San Francisco, and an MPH from the University of Washington. He was a fellow in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program and was awarded an honorary doctor of science degree from Creighton University.
Career
Elias has worked as a senior associate at the International Programs Division of the Population Council, traditionally close to the Rockefeller Foundation, from 1990-2000. He served as country representative of Thailand.
Between 2000-2011, Dr. Elias then worked as the president and CEO of Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH) , an Seattle-based international, nonprofit organization, mostly financed by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation[2] that "advise and partner with public institutions, businesses, grassroots groups, and investors"[3] in health matters. Their lobbyism ("advocacy and policy professionals") make sure policymakers, advocates, influencers, and citizens have the right support and information to "enact policies that bring health solutions to scale."
He is presently President of the Global Development Program at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. He leads the foundation’s efforts to accelerate the delivery of healthcare products and solutions to the world's poorest people. The Global Development program focuses on 5 program areas: family planning; maternal, newborn, and child health; nutrition; polio; and vaccine delivery. A common theme of these programs is innovative and integrated delivery.[4]
He is a strong proponent of extensive use of vaccines, in line with the thinking of his sponsor Bill Gates, where Elias pointed out the "The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is always looking to support innovative and creative ways to expand access to and use of vaccines."[5].
He is a member of the advisory committee to the director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Elias was named the Schwab Foundation’s Social Entrepreneur of the Year for the United States in 2005. The Foundation is financed by Klaus Schwab, the central figure in the organizing of the World Economic Forum.
He serves on various advisory boards, including the Creigton University Board of Trustees; and the University of Washington Global Health External Advisory Board. He also represents the Gates Foundation as the chair of the Polio Oversight Board of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, the chair of the Investors Group of the Global Financing Facility, and co-chair of the Family Planning 2020 Reference Group.
